27. John 11:1-27 Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life

1. SCRIPTURE

SCRIPTURE HIGHLIGHTS:
1 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” 17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.  Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,  26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

  • God/Jesus loves us (v. 5)
  • God’s timing is perfect, and it’s different from our calculations (vv. 5-6, )
  • Jesus is the source of true life (v. 25).
  • Jesus invites a personal response (v. 26).

What does this passage reveal about human nature?
  • We struggle to understand God’s timing and purposes. (vv. 4-6, 21, 32).

  • We often limit what we think God can do (vv. 21, 39).

  • Our faith grows through challenges (v. 27).

What did this passage mean to its original audience?
  • This event happened in Bethany, close to Jerusalem, where Jesus’ growing influence was concerning to the religious leaders. Raising Lazarus would be a major public miracle that would challenge their authority.

3. APPLICATION:

What does this passage impact my affections, attitudes and actions?

Jesus delayed going to Lazarus, but it was for a greater purpose. That challenges me to ask: Do I trust God’s timing, or do I get frustrated when He doesn’t act immediately?
Like Martha, I sometimes feel that God is "too late" in answering my prayers. But this passage reminds me that God is never late—He is always working for a greater purpose.
Even when I don’t understand, I want to trust that His timing is perfect. also She, despite her sorrow, chooses to declare her faith in Jesus (v. 27). I want to do the same. When I face loss, disappointment, or waiting seasons, I will choose to trust God rather than doubt Him.

4. PRAYER:

Dear Jesus,
Thank You for being the resurrection and the life. Even when I don’t understand Your timing, help me to trust that You are working for a greater purpose. When I feel discouraged or afraid, remind me that my hope is in You, not in my circumstances.

Give me the faith to declare, like Martha, that You are my Lord and Savior, no matter what I face. Help me to trust in Your perfect timing and to believe that You bring life and restoration in every situation.

In your name, Amen.

Job said " Tho he slay me, yet will I trust him." Our stories are still being written. When we face a trial and it makes no sense to trust God in it, He is still God and He is the substance and the evidence that we need to hold on keeping going to see what the end will be.
