1. John 1:1-18-Jesus, the Word Made Flesh(The Incarnation)

-

1. SCRIPTURE

1 In the beginning the Word already existed.
    The Word was with God,
    and the Word was God.
2 He existed in the beginning with God.
3 God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,[a]
and his life brought light to everyone.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.[b]
6 God sent a man, John the Baptist,[c] 7 to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. 8 John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
14 So the Word became human[d] and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness.[e] And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
15 John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’”
16 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.[f] 17 For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God,[g] is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.

2. OBSERVATIONS :

  • The first chapter of John’s account of the good news about Jesus serves as an introduction to the letter. It begins with the phrase “In the beginning”. This not by accident or coincidence, but full of significance. The Holy Spirit, through John, is announcing that God is bringing about his new creation though the coming of Jesus Christ. The opening tells the reader that God is doing something new and something big, and he is doing it through his WORD.

Chapter one introduces us to some important information about Jesus.
Jesus is the “word”. God’s word is his self-expression. The meaning is explained in vs. 18 “No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side (i.e. Jesus), he has made him known.”
God the Father has disclosed himself most fully in the person of His Son, Jesus.
Jesus is both with God and is God. That would be incoherent if not for the reality of God’s triune nature. He distinct from the Father while possessing the Father’s divine nature.
Jesus is co-eternal with the Father. He was with the Father from “the beginning”
Jesus is co-creator with the Father. Everything made through him. Nothing made without him.
Jesus is the giver of life.
Jesus came to earth, taking on a fully human nature.
Jesus is full of grace and truth. This phrase is synonymous with the common Old Testament description of God the Father as one who is full of “steadfast love and faithfulness”.

Even though Jesus was full of grace and truth, most Jews who were witnesses to Jesus did not recognize who he was and as a result they rejected him. The good news is that anyone, Jew or Gentile, who received Jesus and trusted in him received the right to become children of God.

3. APPLICATION:

Since Jesus is the all-powerful God, then it would be foolish to ignore him and reject him. I owe him my worship.  Because Jesus is full of steadfast love and faithfulness, I can trust him to be with me and to be for me despite my weakness and failures. Jesus has come for everyone. Believing and receiving Jesus is the one and only condition that needs to be met to become a child of God.

How should the truth in this passage influence my attitude, affections, and actions? I am in awe of Jesus’ glory and power as one who was and is the almighty God, creator of all things. The truth about him compels me to worship him and submit to him. His steadfast love and faithfulness to me, demonstrated by his sacrifice for me, inspires me and fills my heart with gratitude and love for him. I will listen to him, obey him, love him, and praise him.

4. PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, I praise you because of who you are and for your steadfast love for me. Help me live each day with an awareness of your power and love and to give you the worship you are due.
