1. SCRIPTURE
1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.
2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
2. OBSERVATIONS :
- God is aware of the trials and tribulations his followers will face and He prepares us for it. (v.1-4).
- God desires for us to grow and flourish in Jesus (v.2).
- The Holy Spirit: Convicting, Guiding, and Glorifying Christ (v. 8, 13, 14).
- The Triune God works in unity: the Father sends the Son, the Son sends the Spirit, and the Spirit glorifies the Son (vv. 13–15).
- God gives us His Spirit to dwell within us—guiding our steps, whispering truth to our hearts, and empowering us to live lives that bring Him honor.
What does this passage reveal about human nature?
Sometimes, we can trick ourselves into thinking we're doing good for God, even when we're actually hurting others. (v.2).
To glorify God in our lives, we need the Holy Spirit's guidance and conviction.
- Jesus was speaking these words during His farewell discourse, just before His crucifixion. The disciples were confused and fearful, expecting a Messiah who would conquer politically—not one who would suffer and leave.
To them, the idea of Jesus “going away” seemed like abandonment. But Jesus reframed it: His leaving would lead to greater intimacy and empowerment, through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit would not just be with them, but would be in them (14:17), guiding them into truth and strengthening them to face persecution.
3. APPLICATION:
What does this passage impact my affections, attitudes and actions?
When I don’t know what to do, I often get frustrated. But Jesus says the Spirit will guide me into truth. In moments of uncertainty, I will stop, and pray: “Holy Spirit, lead me. I trust You.” Then I’ll wait and listen before reacting.
I also sometimes feel overwhelmed by weakness or spiritual fatigue. But Jesus says it’s better to have the Spirit than to rely on our own willpower. I want to depend on the Spirit, not just try harder. So, Every morning, I will begin by praying: “Holy Spirit, fill me today. Be my strength and guide.” I’ll walk with Him, not just for Him.
4. PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. I confess that I often feel lost and confused, but I trust that your Spirit is always with me, guiding me into truth.
Holy Spirit, Thank You for being my Helper. Thank You for coming to live in me. Help me to be receptive to Your conviction, and to trust in your guidance. Teach me what is true, and help me to live in a way that honors Jesus.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
