3. John 1:29-34 Jesus, the Lamb of God Who Takes Away Sin

1. SCRIPTURE

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.
33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.

2. OBSERVATIONS :

  • Jesus is the 'Lamb of God' who takes away the sin of the world. This directly connects Him to the sacrificial system of the Old Testament, where a lamb was offered as a sacrifice for sin (Exodus 12:1-13, Isaiah 53:7). As the ultimate Lamb, Jesus is the fulfillment of God's plan to remove sin once and for all (v. 29).

  •  Jesus is not just a prophet or teacher; He is the One who will give the Holy Spirit to people (v. 33).

  • Jesus is the promised Messiah and the Son of God, and He is the fulfillment of God's redemptive plan (v. 34).

3. APPLICATION:

Knowing that Jesus is the Lamb of God makes me realize how much He loves me. If Jesus willingly gave His life for me, my love for Him should grow deeper. This passage reminds me to focus more on Jesus in my daily life. Instead of being distracted by things that don’t matter, I want to spend more time with Him through prayer and reading the Bible. My heart should desire Him more than the temporary things of this world.

Since Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit (v. 33), I am not left to follow Him in my own strength. The Holy Spirit helps me grow, convicts me of sin, and gives me the power to live as Jesus calls me to. Instead of struggling to be "good enough," I need to rely on the Spirit’s guidance every day.

4. PRAYER:

Dear God,

Thank You for sending Jesus to take away my sin. I don’t want to take His sacrifice for granted. Help me to remember His love daily and to live in a way that honors Him. Fill my heart with a deeper love for Jesus, that I may desire Him above all else and walk closely with Him each day.
Holy Spirit, please transform my heart. Shape my thoughts, desires, and actions so that I may reflect Christ in all I do.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
