22. John 8:31-59 Jesus Declares Freedom

1. SCRIPTURE

SCRIPTURE HIGHLIGHTS:
- 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

- 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

- 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”

- 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”

2. OBSERVATIONS :

What does this passage reveal about God?
  • Jesus offers true freedom (vv. 31-32, 36).
  • Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”
Jesus promises eternal life to those who keep His word, have faith in Him, and follow Him (v. 51).
  • “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
    - Jesus is eternal and one with God(v. 58). He is using God’s divine name (I AM from Exodus 3:14)

What does this passage reveal about human nature?
  •  “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
    - People are under the power of sin, as sin enslaves them (v. 34)

What did this passage mean to its original audience?

  •  "Truly, truly" In John 8 - It is used to emphasize the importance and truth of what He is about to say. This phrase serves to grab the attention of His listeners, signifying that His words are not just ordinary statements, but divine, authoritative truths. So, It’s a call for the audience to pay close attention because what He is saying comes directly from God. It’s as though Jesus is saying, "Listen closely, this is the absolute truth."

  • Many of Jesus’ listeners struggled with the idea that they needed to be freed from sin (v. 33), because they assumed they were already righteous.

3. APPLICATION:

How does this passage impact my attitude?

I often experience how sin enslaves me and breaks my relationship with God. I now recognize that I truly need Jesus' freedom. "Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death" (v. 51). This teaches me that God's word is the key to true life and freedom.

How does this passage challenge my actions?
Jesus said, “Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin” (v. 34). I ask myself : Are there habits, fears, or thought patterns that still control me?  I will actively surrender my struggles to Jesus, trusting that His power can break any bondage in my life. I will listen carefully, reflect deeply, and apply God's words to my life.

4. PRAYER:

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for being the truth that sets me free. I confess that sometimes I act like I don’t need Your help, but I know that I can’t overcome sin on my own. Help me to abide in Your Word every day so that I can grow in truth and freedom. Help me to live in the power of Your freedom, breaking free from anything that holds me back.

In Your name, Amen.
