26. John 10:22-42 Jesus, One with the Father

1. SCRIPTURE

SCRIPTURE HIGHLIGHTS:
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be broken— 36 do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”

42 And many believed in him there.

2. OBSERVATIONS :

What does this passage reveal about God?
  • Jesus is the Good Shepherd who knows His people (v. 27).
  • Jesus gives eternal life that is secure in Him. Jesus assures His followers that once they are in His care, no one can take them away or snatch them out of His or the Father’s hand (vv. 28-29). Cf. Romans 8:38-39
  • Jesus is One with the Father (v. 30).
  • God reveals Himself through His works (v. 38).

What does this passage reveal about human nature?
  • People refuse to accept the truth when it challenges their old customs, stereotypes, or deeply held beliefs (v. 24-26, 31, 39).

  • Those who truly belong to Jesus will listen to His voice and follow him (v. 27).
  • Although many reject the truth and deny Jesus, there are still many open hearts who respond to the truth and confess Jesus as Lord (v. 42).

What did this passage mean to its original audience?

  • This moment took place during the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) (v. 22), a time when the Jews celebrated the rededication of the temple. They were expecting a political Messiah, but Jesus was revealing something greater—His divine identity and mission.

  • Jesus’ statement “I and the Father are one” (v. 30) was seen as blasphemy by the religious leaders, which is why they tried to stone Him (v. 31). In their minds, no human could claim to be equal with God.

3. APPLICATION:

What does this passage impact my affections, attitudes and actions?

This passage really makes me reflect on how secure I am in Jesus. When He says, “No one will snatch them out of my hand,” it reminds me that my salvation isn’t about me trying harder or being perfect—it’s about Him holding onto me. There are days when I feel weak in my faith, but Jesus promises that He’s got me, no matter what.

It also makes me ask myself, Am I really listening to Jesus? He says, “My sheep hear my voice... and they follow me.” I don’t want to just hear about Jesus on Sundays or read the Bible like a checklist—I want to actually listen and follow Him every day. So, I will apply what I learn and follow Jesus’ teachings in my daily decisions.

I love how, even though many rejected Jesus, some still believed (v. 42). That encourages me to keep doing this ministry, even when it feels like no one is listening or there’s no impact. We shouldn’t be discouraged when people don’t accept the truth. Not everyone will, but some will—and that makes it all worth it.

4. PRAYER:

Dear Jesus,
Thank You for holding me and never letting go. Even when my faith feels weak, I’m grateful that my security is in You, not my own strength.

Help me truly listen to Your voice and obey, even when it’s difficult. Keep my heart open to Your truth, and help me not miss what You’re doing.

And Lord, help me to be bold about my faith. I know not everyone will believe, but I trust that You are still drawing people to Yourself. Use me to point others to You.

In your name, Amen.
