Matthew 26:30-56
SCRIPTURE HIGHLIGHT
OBSERVATION
Peter and the disciples obviously loved Jesus, they adored Him, honored Him, and they would’ve given their lives to protect or save Jesus from any physical danger. We obviously can’t save or protect Jesus; He saves and protects us from all danger seen and unseen. But often times we as Christians try to do in the flesh, what only can be done spiritually.
We can’t do spiritual things in our flesh that pleases God. (Romans 8:8) We must die to self and human effort in order that God’s Holy Spirit can lead us.
Jesus desires to take control of our lives. God has a plan for each of us, and we can only achieve it when we die to our own plans, and give Him full control of our lives. Being a good Christian is impossible to achieve in our own efforts apart from the Holy Spirit. There are things we have to die to in order that God might live in us and use us for His glory. Luke 9:23 Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
APPLICATION
Failing can sometimes be a good thing because it reminds us that we need help and we don’t have it all together, were not perfect and we need God. Peter thought he had it together and he thought he could do a great work for God by himself, in the flesh (his own physical power) as did all the other disciples. But in the very next chapter, they all fell short by falling asleep several times, when Jesus needed them to pray with Him as He was entering His time to be crucified.
We shouldn’t be too hard on ourselves when we fail, but we should also recognize where the true power comes from. The power to stand, the power to follow through, use wisdom and to do all the great and wonderful things that’s in the heart, comes from God. We need to recognize that without Him, working in our own strength we can do nothing but fail. John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
PRAYER
Father, I pray that our dependence, wisdom and desires comes from you. We trust that You will gives us faith to believe where You’re leading us. We don’t trust in ourselves or our ability. We will fail every time if we do it without you but with you, we can do all things through Christ that gives us strength. We pray for your strength, your leadership, and we pray for your wisdom to guide our thoughts and our hearts lead us on the path that you desire us to go, we pray this in Jesus’ name Amen!
SCRIPTURE HIGHLIGHT
Matthew 26:31-35 Jesus said to them “you will all fall away because of Me this night. It is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered” but “after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee” Peter answered Him “though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away” Jesus said to him “truly, I tell you, this very night before the rooster crows you will deny Me three times” Peter said to Him “even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same thing.
