This week we continued in our series #deathtoselfie on the topic of relationships. The big idea this week was that our social media driven culture has redefined what it means to be a friend. We live in a culture in which we could have 300 Facebook friends and still feel lonely. So how do we honor Christ and have friendships to the glory of God? Jesus said “they will know you are my disciples in the way you love people”. We need to learn what it means to love people well.
Be present- Jesus is a “with us” God. His name literally means “God with us”. The first step in loving well is to be “with” people. This means we need to start living face to face instead of screen to screen. Authentic relationships require us to be living beside people, even to the extent of having our agendas disrupted by the needs of others. Loving people begins when we are present in their lives.
Be engaged- Presence isn’t enough if we fail to engage. We need both. 1 Peter 4:8 encourages us to continue to show deep love and concern for the needs of those around us. When we are with people we need to give attention to their needs. Disciples who love are disciples who pay attention.
